Celebrating National Press Day: Recalling the History of Algerian Journalism and the Challenges of Digital Transformation

As part of the commemoration of National Press Day, which falls on 22 October each year, the Directorate of Communication and External Relations of the Higher National School of Journalism and Information Sciences – Emhamed Yezid, supervised the recording of a radio programme dedicated to recalling the history of Algerian journalism, its national mission, and the professional and technological challenges it faces amid accelerated digital transformations.
The programme featured Professor Cherif Dris, Professor Ismail Oulbassir and Professor Samir Arjoun. The discussions addressed the importance of professional and responsible media in conveying reliable information, combating disinformation and strengthening public awareness in the face of systematic digital campaigns and the growth of misleading content.
The programme also highlighted the challenges posed by artificial intelligence to journalistic practice, and the stakes imposed by new technologies regarding information verification, detection of fabricated content, preservation of credibility and respect for professional ethics, making continuous media training a necessity to keep pace with transformations and ensure responsible use of these technologies.
This occasion carries deep historical significance, as it commemorates the publication of the first issue of “The Algerian Resistance”, the organ of the National Liberation Front and the National Liberation Army, in 1955, recalling the role of national media in the liberation struggle and its contribution to building awareness and defending the causes of the homeland.
Through this initiative, the School renews its commitment to training generations of journalists capable of combining professional competence with critical awareness, keeping pace with technological transformations while adhering to the values of credibility, responsibility and journalistic ethics.
Special thanks and appreciation to Dr Houda Hammadouche, head of the School’s studios, and to student Wissal Zaidi, for their contribution to the success of this initiative.
Homage to the women and men of the Algerian press, and fidelity to the memory of a media that made the word a message, truth a responsibility, and service to the homeland a commitment.
